Headline: Kopernikus Project Ariadne

The energy transition is accompanied by many challenges and complex detailed questions. To find socially acceptable solutions, a broad-based dialogue process with all relevant stakeholder groups is required. Together with representatives from politics, business, and society, the Kopernikus project Ariadne explores meaningful strategies for energy transformation and their acceptance by the general public.

Creating action-relevant knowledge through dialogue

The aim of the three-year joint project Ariadne (full name: Ariadne - Evidence-Based Assessment for the Design of German energy transition) is to create an overarching perspective, analyze the impact of policy instruments and identify a whole range of possible policy options for shaping energy transition. At the heart of the project is a Green-White paper process - it is intended to present decision-makers with options for shaping policy in such a way that compliance with climate protection goals is possible with socially accepted policy instruments. The guiding principle of the Ariadne energy system transformation project - a consortium of 26 partners - is to provide an overview and orientation for the design and implementation of energy transition in a joint learning process with politics, business, and society. Ariadne, the successor project to ENavi, is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) over three years and is part of the Kopernikus-Forschungsinitiative. As the fourth Copernicus pillar, Ariadne complements the projects ENSURE, P2X und SynErgie. Together, the Kopernikus projects form one of the largest German research initiatives on energy system transformation.

Understanding the needs and expectations of society

The central goal of the RIFS-based sub-project is the (regionally) differentiated empirical analysis of the social dimensions of the energy transition. Building on the preliminary work of the RIFS project Social Sustainability Barometer of the Energy Transition Energy, an annual representative panel survey will be conducted to assess the preferences, attitudes, and evaluations of the German population regarding the design and implementation of the energy transition. The Expansion of renewable energy and transmission mobility will be a particular focus of these surveys, which will be supplemented by shorter focus surveys on selected aspects and questionnaires conducted in the course of accompanying research around the project's various dialogue formats. The survey focuses on the areas of power generation and transport. The surveys are supplemented by short-focus surveys focusing on selected aspects and questionnaires as part of accompanyin g research of the dialogue formats. The results will both contribute to a better understanding of society's needs and expectations in the field of energy transition and help political decision-makers to develop instruments and measures that are both socially accepted and just.
