Co-Creative Reflection and Dialogue Space (CCRDS)

At COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, the IASS is offering for the third time a space for facilitated informal conversations. This time, most sessions have a thematic focus to the role of trust and fear at the COP. In addition to that Partners are invited to co-create science dialogues.
In Madrid, the primary objective was to determine whether it is at all possible to cultivate authentic and trusting communication in an environment like the UN Climate Change Conference and the design principles (toolset, skillset, mindset) needed to achieve this. In Glasgow, the researchers used the CCRDS to experiment with as many methods and formats as possible in order to explore their possibilities, potentials, and limitations (Wamsler at al 2020, Fraude et al 2021, Mar et al 2021, Mar et al in review, Schroeder et al in review). The research results and feedback from COP participants confirmed the concerns and hypotheses that underpin the CCRDS to such an extent that it was decided to continue the research project. This year's climate conference, COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, will see the CCRDS return.

What will our research focus on this time?
How can we confront fears and strengthen trust in UN climate policy? Together with several partner organizations, the TranS-Mind research group at the IASS is particularly interested in this question and aims to design and explore (political) spaces that incorporate and embrace the inner dimension of transformation. The Co-Creative Reflection and Dialogue Space (CCRDS) at the 27th UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, serves as a relevant and complex case for this exploration. Here, space shall be provided where feelings and emotions, i.e. fear and trust, can be expressed and reflected upon. In this way, we want to better understand the design principles of such spaces and find out what other forms of dialogue may cause among climate actors.

Apply for a session at the CCRDS with your research question
A second strand of research will look at what happens when innovative dialogue formats and a supportive culture of communication and relationships are used to host discussions of classical (natural) scientific issues, rather than conventional lectures or panel discussions. The CCRDS team is offering to support the moderation of discussion panels on designated scientific topics as part of this research.

Urban Climate Chance Action As urban areas hold more and more population, urban climate change action is important. At COP 27, urban climate change action aims to connect with COP27 experts from IASS to make a dialogue about climate change with interdisciplinary methods and global scales. This dialogue is to connect experts, early-researchers, enterpreneurs, and public to have a multi-disciplinary conversation. The network "PhD for future" wants to address questions such as: How to enhance scientific action at global scale? How to enhance public engagement into urban climate change action from the perspective of scientist-entrepreneur and public? |

Social Presencing Theatre - From Ego to Eco At Presencing Institute we are creating tools and methodologies for social transformation that aim to shift our attention from Ego to Eco-system Awareness. Too often we collectively produce results nobody wants and therefore limit our potential contributions to reverse global warming and other global crisis. Social Presencing Theater created by Arawana Hayashi, is a social art form that aims to address the disconnect between head and hand by activating the intelligence of the heart. It blends together cutting edge systems thinking with systems sensing to deepen our capacities for authentic dialogue and listening. Embodied fear, embodied trust - a 4D mapping exploration In this session we will use the 4D mapping method, which was developed by Arawana Hayashi from the Presencing Institute as part of Social Presencing Theater. As an embodied group method, we will use it to look at a specific topic and go into an enquiry with it. The topic will be about the focus of the CCRDS: Fear and trust at the COP27. In the method different people are invited to embody the important stakeholders within this topic. We will not only look at the status quo, but also the highest potential of this context. How can a different COP regarding fear and trust look like? How would it empower the different stakeholders present? How would it feel like to be in this state? What does net-zero mean for Methane? Methane (CH4) is often overshadowed by CO2, despite the fact that its mitigation is critical to staying within temperature targets. Furthermore, methane's impacts are not well represented by the concept of 'CO2 equivalence’, due to its short atmospheric lifetime. A Simulated Mediation of a Climate Crisis-Related Dispute: Exploring Fear & Trust Members of MBBI’s Climate Change Project will demonstrate a simulated two-party mediation of a conflict caused by climate change-related impacts. The simulation will illustrate various segments of a two-party mediation and will be followed by a group discussion with attendees on how distrust and fear played a role in the conflict and how the mediation helped the parties move beyond their distrust and fear.
